Superintendent Leif Crozier, with a force of North-West Mounted Police, was routed by Métis under Gabriel Dumont near Duck Lake, Sask. The Battle of Duck Lake marked the outbreak of the North-West Resistance. The resistance was a violent clash of cultures that pitted the Canadian government against the Métis and their Aboriginal allies in what is now Saskatchewan and Alberta.
