Big Bear (Mistahimaskwa), a Plains Cree chief, surrendered at Fort Carlton (in modern-day Saskatchewan). Concerned with the disappearance of the buffalo, Big Bear advocated peaceful negotiation. His inability to negotiate successfully with the Canadian government led some of his followers to take up arms. As a result, he was sentenced to three years in prison.
