Beginning on this day, explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert achieved a set of “firsts” in quick succession. He took possession of Newfoundland for Queen Elizabeth I, England’s first New World attachment. He also drowned at sea one month later. Elizabeth had previously described Gilbert as a man "of not good happ by sea."
