Toronto - February 8, 2010 – Just in time for Black History Month, the Historica-Dominion Institute, with the support of TD Bank Financial Group, has launched the newly redesigned Black History Canada Portal (
www.BlackHistoryCanada.ca).
This bilingual online gateway provides teachers, students, the media and all Canadians with a thematically organized and annotated selection of authoritative resources that have been vetted for historical accuracy and relevance. The newly redesigned site features embedded video from the well-known Heritage Minutes series, an expanded timeline of important events in Black history in Canada, profiles of celebrated Black Canadians and over 50 new illustrations.
“February is an important time for us to celebrate Canada’s diversity and to recognize the many contributions of Black Canadians,” says Andrew Cohen, President of the Historica-Dominion Institute. “The Black History Canada Portal is a fantastic resource for media, teachers, students, and all Canadians who want to learn more about the history of Canada’s Black community.”

TD Bank Financial Group also provided the funding for the development of the first edition of the Black History Canada portal in 2006. TD Bank Financial Group also sponsors The Historica-Dominion Institute’s Passages to Canada program, a speakers’ bureau of 600 immigrants who share their stories of coming to Canada with classrooms and community groups across the country.
