Regina – January 14, 2010 – This Thursday, January 14, 2010, The Memory Project, a program of the Historica-Dominion Institute, will bring together veterans, servicemen and women, cadets and teachers for a Memory Project Orientation event and reception. The aim of the event is to bring more awareness to the Memory Project and increase participation among Regina’s veteran and military community.
Created in 2001, the Memory Project connects veterans and students online and in classrooms across the country. The more than 1,500 veteran volunteers represent a wide range of conflicts, including World War II, Korean War, Peacekeeping Operations and Canadian Forces experiences.
The event will run from 5-7pm, and will be attended by the Hon. Yogi Huyghebaert who will offer his remarks on the importance of veterans and Canadian Forces personnel sharing stories with Canada’s youth. "The intergenerational dialogue that happens when our veteran volunteers visit schools is really the highlight of the program” says Jeremy Diamond, Managing Director of the Historica-Dominion Institute’s National Office. “Through the Memory Project, Canada’s young people learn what it was like for someone, not much older than themselves, to make the decision to serve their country and their experiences overseas or at the Home front. These first hand accounts are an invaluable asset to teaching Canadian history.”
The Memory Project Speakers’ Bureau, created in 2001, connects veterans and students online and in classrooms across the country. The more than 1,500 veteran volunteers represent a wide range of conflicts, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Peacekeeping Operations and Canadian Forces experiences and visit over 175,000 students each year. This fall the Memory Project celebrated having reached over 1 million young people since the program began.
